The Acolyte: The asterisks delineated and distorted the urban geography yet the series was a farewell so the bows given were not blasphemous but sincerely given.
Over all “Ascension”, the season conclusion of The Acolyte proves to be a rather hit-and-miss affair. To some extent it satisfies the fundamental attribute of the series which is; the smooth integrated lightsaber fight scenes between Sol & Qimir as well as Osha & her dark side twin; Mae. In one of the stand-out performances of the year, the usually subtle Amandla Stenberg rules and even impressive fight scenes that can be easily seen as a representation of both sides of the Force. However, this too can be pinpointed as another drawback that was common to the rest of the episodes of the season. Even though the season finale gives a sufficient account of Osha’s progression to the top of the eponymous Acolyte, it fails to bring out this progression in a satisfying manner as a climax should be able. It is worth pointing out that the fast pace of the series throughout the season hardly allows the audience to ponder over the character’s goals and desires and significant narrative strands. Slow and subpar plots focusing on Qimir, Sol, and the famous Darth Plagueis were lost deep into the mix.
The episode tells and offers some shocking moments among which is a revelation about Darth Plagueis that viewers wish the episode was longer. Although this is the case, the strategy looks more like a basis for a season two, with characters like Osha and Mae’s background yet to be disclosed.
Here's a breakdown:
Highlights: A flair in fight scenes, especially Osha vs. Mae confrontation.
Lowlights: Many of these problems are attributed to problems in pacing including rushing through a scene, character and story development.
Overall: A fairly satisfactory ending which rests on the promise of the second season which might not be produced.
If you were a fan of the fight scenes throughout The Acolyte, “Ascension” could be for you. However, as any avid fan would probably guess, people looking for a rich lore experience will be probably left unsatisfied.
